Gala Games’ GRIT is a Wild West-themed battle royale video game that will debut on the Epic Games Store. GRIT will include NFT items that are owned by users. NFT games have been banned by Rival Marketplace Steam.
After leading PC gaming marketplace Steam banned Web3 games that had NFT crypto hooks or HTML3 graphics last October, Epic Games Store, a rising competitor, claimed it would continue to allow such games.
Now we know which game will be the first to debut on Epic’s platform.
Gala Games today announced that its Wild West-themed battle-royale shooter GRIT will be the first NFT-powered Epic Games Store game. GRIT is an online multiplayer game that Windows PC users can play for free. It will also feature NFT assets that you can resell and use within the game.
An NFT token is a digital asset that proves ownership. It can be used to purchase digital goods like artwork, collectibles and in-game assets. Examples of gaming include avatars and vehicles, weapons, apparel, virtual land plots, and apparel.
Gala will release 10,000 avatars to GRIT players. Each avatar has a unique design and customization options for owners. The avatars will be available for purchase via the “Gunslinger’s Box”, which is currently on sale at Galaverse in Malta.
GRIT is a Fortnite-like game that features a large player pool in a free-for all battle to the death. However, it has a distinct Western aesthetic. It will be released in 2022. The game runs on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.
Gala Games’ press release indicates that GRIT will not be the only Epic Games Store game launched by the company.
“Epic is a visionary and pioneer in the videogame industry. Gala Games titles are now available on Epic Game Store,” John Osvald (Gala’s president of games), stated in a press release. For those who are still unsure of the benefits of digital ownership, easy access to Web3 games can be a turning point.
Gala Games quickly rose to prominence in the blockchain gaming industry. They enlisted veteran game developers such as Will Wright (The Sims), and Peter Molyneux(Fable) for NFT-enhanced video games. In addition, they signed NFT-savvy celebrities like Steve Aoki and Snoop Dogg.
According to CoinMarketCap, the GALA token is currently priced at $0.08 and has a market cap total of $555 millions.
Epic Games helps crypto find its home
Epic Games, which is the developer of Fortnite and the Epic Games Store, is also behind Unreal Engine. As of 2021, the Epic Games Store had 194,000,000 total users. This makes it an important launchpad for Gala or GRIT.
Valve’s Steam marketplace, currently the most popular PC gaming platform is strongly opposed to games that use NFTs or crypto tokens. Last October it banned such games from being launched on the Steam marketplace.
Epic Games CEO and co-founder Tim Sweeney sent a welcome message for creators of these games.
He wrote that Epic Games Store would welcome any games that use blockchain technology, provided they adhere to the applicable laws, disclose their terms and are rated by an appropriate group. Epic does not use crypto in its games but we are open to innovation in finance and technology.
