Meta announced the launch of a digital clothing store where users can purchase clothing for their avatars. According to the company, clothing and accessories will become an integral part of users’ identity expression. This will encourage them to spend money digitally on clothes that can be worn on all Meta apps including Instagram and Facebook.
Companies have started to expand their businesses to clothing, in order to make money from the demand for metaverse users’ expressions. Meta is one of these companies. It recently launched a digital clothing shop, the Meta Avatars Store. This will allow users to buy clothing from different brands so they can dress their metaverse avatars.
The store will roll to different markets this week and will feature digital designs by Thom Browne, Balenciaga and Prada. It will also be available for Meta’s avatars via Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Pricing for the various pieces of clothing is still unknown.
Meta’s Digital Bet
Meta’s wager is simple: The company believes that the metaverse, which will continue to grow in size over the next few years, will increase the demand for digital items. This is why Meta switched to a metaverse-driven company earlier in the year. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Meta, spoke out about the importance of these items.
Digital goods will become a powerful way to express your self in the metaverse, and a major driver of the creative industry. I am excited to expand the range of brands available and to bring VR to you soon.
Zuckerberg may be referring to Horizon Worlds as Meta’s flagship metaverse application. This app can only be used by Meta’s Quest owners, who have a line VR headsets. It is possible that Horizon World users will be able also to use the digital items.
Experts warn that Meta’s quest to lure users into the metaverse won’t be easy. Zuckerberg already knows that the metaverse pivot will be costly. He stated in May that the change would cause the company to lose “significant amounts of money” over the next three to five year.
