Meta has partnered with DressX, a digital fashion startup, to offer new avatar fashion looks in Meta’s Avatar Store.
DressX outfits are now available for purchase starting July 19. They can be worn on avatars across Meta platforms including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Quest, and Instagram.
The startup, which is based out of Los Angeles, was launched in 2020. It aims to provide digital-only collections by brands and 3D designers. Crunchbase reports that the company raised $3.3M in funding. It was also the first digital fashion brand ever to launch a Roblox collection. It previously collaborated with H&M in order to launch virtual fashion and was a finalist at the LVMH 2022 Innovation Award.
The brand collaborated with Jason Wu to create a digital version Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Ball dress.
Luxury and fashion brands are exploring ways to expand their presence in virtual reality in order to capture a portion of the $50 billion luxury market that analysts at Morgan Stanley predict. Digital fashion enthusiasts and creators claim that it allows them to express themselves and their individuality in a way that is not possible with online communication.
DressX joins other major-name brands who have added virtual clothes to Meta’s marketplace. Thom Browne and Balenciaga are among them. The Block also covered last month.
Outfits can be purchased for as little as $2.99 and up to $8.99. Marketplace was introduced in select countries, including Canada, Mexico, Thailand and the US. It will soon be available in other countries.
