Sega, a well-known Japanese game developer, suggested the use of metaverse elements and NFT in its new game proposal. This new framework, called “Super Game”, includes a series AAA games that will make use of Sega’s existing IP (intellectual propriety). Masayoshi, a producer at Sega, said in an interview that the new framework will allow them to explore how different games could be connected, hinting at an IP metaverse.
Sega Explains ‘Super Game’ Initiative
Sega, one the most prominent Japanese game developers, has given more information on its “Super Game” initiative. It also explains how new technologies such as NFTs or the metaverse may be included in it. According to the company, “Super Game” includes a set of requirements that all games must fulfill.
Sega’s executive vice president Shuji Utsumi stated that these games must have a multiplatform release, global multi-language development and a simultaneous worldwide release. They also need to be AAA titles with large budgets. These games are likely to be “global blockbusters” because of all this.
Sega previously stated that it may invest 100 billion yen ($882million) to bring this initiative to fruition.
NFT and Metaverse Vibes
Sega executives didn’t limit themselves to explaining this new initiative in the near future. They also spoke about the future of Sega and gaming in general during the interview. Sega producer Masayoshi Kikuchi declared:
It’s a natural extension of the future gaming industry that will include new areas like cloud gaming and NFT. SuperGame is also being developed from the viewpoint of connecting different games.
Sega registered “Sega NFT” trademark in Japan in December. However, Sega has stated that they could drop NFT experimentation within the company if gamers see them as a money-making scheme.
Sega may be considering developing a metaverse to accommodate its IPs due to the “connected” trait. This isn’t a new idea. Another Japanese developer has already taken this step. Bandai Namco is currently creating a multi IP metaverse. Gundam was the first IP to be developed under this plan.
